I was watching a documentary the other week.
A family on a gap year adventure in Africa. They wanted to travel all the way from South Africa to Egypt. In a jeep.
I cringed when I watched the footage of their overturned jeep. Later they broke down in a no-go area where outlaws rule. (The second jeep they had bought had been kind of “stitched together” by using bits of the jeep that was a write-off. Because they wanted to save money. How about saving your lives instead?)
I hope our trip is better organised than this. Yes, I accept (to the best of my ability...) that you kind of have to wing it from time to time when travelling in a place like Africa, but you still need to have the kit that is fit for the job.
As AH reassuringly has pointed out, having tourists killed on one of your tours is generally not the best advertising, so I expect our tour guides to be professional.
